Trinidad Rancheria looks to gain private control of land around harbor

Shomik Mukherjee March 4, 2019 If it successfully enters a federal land trust, the Trinidad Rancheria would have much larger control over the Trinidad Bay area.

The Trinidad Rancheria tribe hopes to enter a “federal land trust” that would grant the tribe private control over the area surrounding Trinidad’s harbor, but city residents and neighboring tribes are concerned a trust would give the Rancheria too much control over the city’s scenic bay.

On the state Coastal Commission’s agenda for Thursday is a recommendation to sign off on the move but with conditions that include the Rancheria needing to coordinate its future development proposals with commission staff. The federal Bureau of Indian Affairs, which initiated the move, would have to comply with the commission’s conditions.
