Our View: Yuba County and region have a couple real game changers operating

Yuba County has a couple of real game changers happening. One is power generation; the other is a casino and hotel.

That might seem incongruous ... a massive dam and power generation operation compared to a gambling resort. But they’re both going to have important impacts on this county and this region.

After 50 years of it being managed and profits taken by PG&E, New Bullards Bar Dam and the power generating facilities are now controlled – along with the profits – by Yuba Water Agency. The gamble taken and the investment made decades ago means big dividends now. The revenue generated from power sales can do a lot – it will be used to fix up the YWA-controlled facilities, restore health to the river, provide invaluable flood control and more. But there will also be revenue available to really make a difference in this county – the YWA board is considering routing its annual property tax revenue into the county general fund. What a boon. And it will pale in comparison to what will be done in the future.
