Kayaking business owner sues Trinidad Rancheria over ‘public access’ concerns at harbor

A pair of Trinidad residents — one of them the owner of a prominent local kayaking company — are suing the Trinidad Rancheria over its efforts to establish full ownership of the city’s harbor area, which they say would allow the tribe to take away free public access to the city’s beach.

Jason Self, who owns Kayak Trinidad, is claiming the Rancheria’s attempt to enter a “federal land trust” over the property — which would give the tribe far more control over the area — could prevent him from using the Trinidad State Beach for his business.
