Bureau of Indian Affairs publishes annual list of federally recognized tribes

February 4, 2019

Right on schedule, the Bureau of Indian Affairs has published its annual list of federally recognized tribes.

The list contains the names of 573 tribal nations. The most recent entrants are the seven Virginia-based tribes whose government-to-government relationships were only recently acknowledged by the United States.

Six of those nations -- the Chickahominy Tribe, the Chickahominy Tribe - Eastern Division, the Monacan Nation, the Nansemond Tribe, the Rappahannock Tribe and the Upper Mattaponi Tribe -- were added to the list last year after being recognized through an act of Congress. The seventh -- the Pamunkey Tribe -- joined the document in 2016 after going through the BIA's acknowledgment process.
