Sheriff: Couple Left Newborn In Casino Parking Lot

April 15, 2010 SACRAMENTO (CBS13)

A couple has been arrested after leaving their seven-week-old baby in the car while they gambled inside Thunder Valley Casino,

according to the Placer County Sheriff's Department.

Thuan Nguyen and Panfila Phan, both 27, of Rancho Cordova, were arrested and charged with willful child endangerment.

The couple was arrested as they returned to their car in the casino's parking garage around 8 p.m., Tuesday evening.

A security guard at the Thunder Valley Casino said he walked by a car parked in the casino's parking garage and noticed a car seat

covered with a blanked in the back seat. He pushed the car to see whether or not a baby was in the seat, and that's when he noticed

movement from beneath the blanket. Concerned for the baby's well-being, he pried open the door, reached inside and unlocked the door.

He took the baby from the car and brought it to the casino's emergency medical personnel to be checked out.

As Placer County Deputies arrived to locate the car's owner, both Nguyen and Phan returned to the car, and were immediately arrested by authorities. They claimed they left the car long enough to use the restroom. However, surveillance video showed the two gambling for

two hours.

The baby was taken into custody by Placer County Children's System of Care.

Both suspects remain in custody on $50,000 bail each. They are expected to be arraigned Friday at 8:30 a.m.
