One person injured in mobile home park blaze City News Service • February 8, 2009 The Desert Sun

MECCA — A fire at the Desert Mobile Home Park, commonly known as Duroville, destroyed two vehicles and damaged a home on Saturday, displacing nine people, according to Cal Fire.
One resident was injured and treated at the scene. The American Red Cross responded to help care for four children and five adults left homeless, firefighters said.

The fire was reported near the 68800 block of Pierce Street at 6:41 a.m., according to Cal Fire-Riverside County Capt. Casey Hartman.

The fire also destroyed two vehicles. Firefighters declared the blaze contained at 7:26 a.m., Hartman said.

Duroville is sometimes home to as many as 5,000 migrant workers and their families, and over the years it has been frequently cited for health violations such as open sewage, faulty wiring and fire hazards.

The 40-acre property is part of the Torres-Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indian Reservation.

In December, a federal judge removed the owner, Harvey Duro, as the operator of the property and appointed an interim management team to take over day-to-day operations.
