When they tried to stop Saubel, he fled, leading them and officers from the Banning Police Department and the California Highway Patrol on a high speed chase into Hemet, according to the news release. A spike strip disabled the BMW on Ramona Expressway and Saubel allgedly fled on foot, but he was captured within a short distance.

Deputies found him to be suffering a serious gunshot wound and called in medical aid.

He was taken to a hospital for treatment.

According to the release, Saubel was northbound along Soboba Road when he opened fire on the southbound victim.

The shooting was Saubel’s second encounter with police involving firearms in three days.

On Oct. 9, he and a companion, Timothy Siva, 29, of Palm Springs, were arrested on possession of stolen and concealed weapons charges during a vehicle stop in the 500 block of East Seventh Street in San Jacinto.

Officers saw two handguns partially hidden in the SUV the two occupied, according to a news release. One of the weapons was reported stolen in a residential burglary. The two were charged with carrying a loaded concealed firearm and being felons in possession of a firearm, in addition to the stolen property charge.

Because of the earlier incident, Saubel was also charged with committing a felony while released on bail because of the shooting.
