Tensions escalate at Soboba Reservation

Inland News Today August 15, 2008

SAN JACINTO--State parole agents are having second thoughts about entering the Soboba Indian Reservation as tensions escalate between local law enforcement agencies and tribal leaders.

Parolees living on the reservation are being asked to leave. Parole agents routinely meet with offenders to make certain they abide by their parole terms.

Three tribal members were killed in a pair of shootouts with sheriff’s deputies last spring. Sergeant Dean Spivacke says extensive ballistics tests are being done to learn the history of the weapons that were seized after the last incident.

“We have to do traces on the serial numbers to determine where the guns were originally sold and the names of the buyers.”

Riverside County Sheriff Stan Sniff has asked the National Gaming Commission to shut down the Soboba Casino over concerns that the public is not safe.
