A tribal member sought for two weeks in connection with guns and ammunition found in a stolen vehicle and on the Soboba Indian Reservation was behind bars and awaiting arraignment, a sheriff’s sergeant said Friday.
Whitecloud Robert Trujillo, 18, was arrested Wednesday at a home in the 1800 block of Cognac Court in San Jacinto, according to sheriff’s Sgt. John Salisbury.
Janei Sanchez, 21, of San Jacinto also was arrested.
Trujillo was booked into the Southwest Detention Center on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of or selling a switchblade knife.
He remained in custody on a no-bail warrant and was set for arraignment this afternoon, but as of Friday morning, no charges had been filed.
Sanchez was booked on suspicion of probation violation and released on $25,000 bail, pending arraignment Oct. 27.
When Trujillo was arrested, he allegedly had two loaded pistols and was wearing a bullet-resistant vest, Salisbury said.
Investigators had been looking for Trujillo since Sept. 11, when they were led to a home on the reservation.
The search warrant was issued after sheriff’s deputies pursued a car around 3 a.m. Sept. 7 that had been reported stolen.
The chase went from Lamb Canyon Road to Castile Canyon Road on the reservation, where deputies lost sight of the car and called a helicopter crew to find it, sheriff’s Lt. Patricia Knudson said.
Deputies deployed a spike strip and eventually the occupants abandoned the car, Knudson said.
Deputies searching the small sedan found ammunition for a .22-caliber weapon, a magazine for a .22-caliber rifle and an empty gun holster, Knudson said.
They also found paperwork linked to Trujillo, who had been staying at the reservation since his return from Indio a few months ago, the lieutenant said.
Armed with a search warrant, deputies went to the Castile Canyon Road home, where Trujillo had been staying with a woman, said Knudson.
They briefly detained the woman and seized two rifles and an illegally altered shotgun, Knudson said.
Deputies then arrested Matt Castro, 22, in the 900 block of Nantucket Street, in San Jacinto, Knudson said.
She said they had information from other sources about Castro’s whereabouts and his alleged involvement with the stolen vehicle.
Authorities believe Castro was a passenger in the stolen car and that Trujillo was the driver.
Castro was on probation on a 2007 robbery conviction when he was arrested.
