UPDATE: Authorities have identified the man who was shot to death on the Soboba Indian Reservation Saturday evening as a 21-year-old reservation resident.
William Dusty Rhodes died despite efforts by paramedics to revive him, said Deputy Herlinda Valenzuela.
ORIGINAL STORY: Riverside County sheriff’s deputies were investigating a homicide today that occurred on the Soboba Indian Reservation near San Jacinto, authorities said.
The incident occurred about 9:10 p.m. Saturday in the 43000 block of Castile Canyon Road, near the San Jacinto River, Sgt. Joe Borja of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said.
Deputies from the Hemet Station went to the reservation after receiving a call about an assault with a deadly weapon, and found a man suffering from apparent gunshot wounds sitting in a parked vehicle on the side of the roadway, Borja said. Firefighters provided medical aid at the scene, but the man, whose name was withheld, died at the scene, he said. The victim’s name was withheld pending notification of next of kin.
It was unclear if the man lived on the reservation.
The deputies who initially arrived at the scene requested additional help when several people became agitated and officers from throughout the area began arriving, said Deputy Herlinda Valenzuela. According to reports on police scanners, officers from Hemet, Murrieta and Temecula converged onto the scene. There were reports that at least two police helicopters were involved in the incident.
The shooting was initially reported near the intersection of Castille Canyon and Soboba roads, Valenzuela said. The caller reported that someone had been shot, she said.
The reservation has been relatively quiet since a series of fatal shootings involving deputies and some tribal members.
Anyone with information about the incident was asked to call investigator Ben Ramirez of the Central Homicide Unit at 760-393-3528 or investigator Brad Farwell at the Hemet Station at 951-791-3419.
