One dead in Soboba shooting
July 13, 2009
A 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder after a man was shot dead Sunday on the Soboba Reservation near San Jacinto, authorities said.
Coroner's officials have identified the man killed as 33-year-old Benjamin Dee Lindsey.
Sheriff's deputies were called to Lindsey's home in the 24000 block of Poppet Flats Road about 4 a.m. where they found him dead and learned that the person suspected of shooting him had fled in a white GMC pickup, a Riverside County Sheriff's Department news release said.
The pickup was spotted by law enforcement on Interstate 10 in Beaumont and the driver led officers on a short chase back onto the reservation, the release said. The driver stopped and ran inside a home, but deputies managed to talk the man out of the house and arrest him without incident, the release said.
Larry Arres, a resident of the reservation, was booked into the Southwest Detention Center on suspicion of murder, the release said.
No information about the circumstances surrounding the shooting was released.
The news release noted that the department "has received the full cooperation of the Soboba Band of Luiseno Indians."
The relationship between the tribe and the Sheriff's Department broke down last year after shootouts with deputies killed three tribal members on the reservation. But after months of outreach efforts and an agreement of understanding, sheriff's officials and the tribe have said relations have improved.
