Firefighters lift escort requirement on Soboba reservation

SAN JACINTO, Calif.—Firefighters responding to emergency calls on the Soboba Indian Reservation no longer need to wait for a sheriff's department escort before entering tribal land.

A spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection in Riverside says Friday's decision restores normal operations at Soboba.

The agency began requiring escorts in January following a series of shootings on the 600-person reservation in San Jacinto (HA'-sin-toe).

Tribal council member Rose Salgado says she welcomes the end of service restrictions for the reservation.

The tribe has been working with sheriff's officials to defuse tensions after three people were killed on the reservation by deputies in May.
