CHUMASH HOSTS PUBLIC MEETING

TO DISCUSS TRIBAL LAND DEVELOPMENT SANTA YNEZ, CA – September 7, 2011

The Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians is hosting a public meeting on Friday, September 16 at 6:00 p.m. in the Samala Showroom at the Chumash Casino Resort to discuss issues relating to tribal land development.
“Many questions have surfaced regarding our Camp 4 property,” said Vincent Armenta, Tribal Chairman of the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians.  “While we don’t yet have development plans in place, we do know that tribal housing is a priority for us.  In addition, we would like to put to rest concerns the community may have regarding the process of placing land into federal trust.”
The meeting, which is open to the public, will feature a panel discussion of distinguished speakers who will address the topic of tribal land development.  The panel will include Chairman Armenta; Carl Artman, former Assistant Secretary of Indian Affairs; Dave Schaffer, Executive Director, All Mission Indian Housing Authority (AMIHA); and Kevin Bearquiver, Assistant Director, Bureau of Indian Affairs Pacific Region.
“We are a tribal government that would like to build tribal housing on our tribal land for our tribal members – it’s as simple as that,” said Chairman Armenta.
The tribe purchased the 1,400-acre parcel, commonly known as Camp 4, from Fess Parker Enterprises in April, 2010.
The location of the meeting, the Samala Showroom at the Chumash Casino Resort, is an age 18 and older venue.
