San Manuel tribal Chairman James Ramos announced this morning that he will challenge San Bernardino County Supervisor Neil Derry in next year's election.
Ramos, who is a member of the San Bernardino Community College Board of Trustees, said he had been contemplating a run for the 3rd District seat for several months. His decision took on more urgency with the criminal charges filed against Derry two weeks ago, he said.
Derry was accused of attempting to disguise a campaign contribution by the state attorney general which charged him with two felonies and a misdemeanor.
"The people of San Bernardino County have been let down time and time again," Ramos said.
Ramos said his priorities including spurring job growth, eliminating waste in government and balancing the county budget.
He was joined by several elected officials from the 3rd District at the announcement in front of the County Government Center including San Bernardino Mayor Pat Morris, Redlands Mayor Pete Aguilar and Yucaipa Mayor Dick Riddell.
Derry took immediate aim at Ramos in a news release where he called on Ramos to release his personal income and property tax records. He also questioned whether as a member of a sovereign Indian tribe Ramos could serve as a county official.
