San Manuels' casino going 3D

San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino is installing 60 3D slot machines this month, becoming the first casino in Southern California to offer the eye-catching high-tech machines.

Instead of the traditional ringing bells and flashing lights, slot winners will see three-dimensional images of animated characters pop up on a screen and put on a colorful show.

The IGT brand Reel Depth slot machines use software with multilayer display technology, which is the layering of two or more liquid crystal displays that provide the 3D image without the need for 3D glasses, according to a San Manuel news release.

Programmers digitally operate the machines, making them more cost-effective for the casino because casino management would no longer have to budget for replacing glass on the machines, changing reel strips or relocating or removing machines from the floor.

Instead, internal software would be installed and programmed on the casino floor by technicians.
