San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, S.B. County Sheriff's Department to renew law enforcement pact

July 17, 2008 By MICHELLE DeARMOND The Press-Enterprise

The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians and the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department are renewing their law enforcement agreement and plan to celebrate it on the reservation next week.

The tribe has been plagued by crime problems at its small reservation near San Bernardino, where the Sheriff's Department has dedicated patrol deputies at all times.

The tribe pays for the supplemental coverage and will discuss the renewal of its contract Wednesday morning at a news conference.

San Manuel Chairman James Ramos took office in April and said at the start of his term that he wants the tribe to step up its security on the reservation. Ramos himself obtained a restraining order last year against a fellow tribal member, saying he feared for his life because the tribal member's family had ties to the Mexican Mafia.

The tribe has its own security force in addition to the sheriff's deputies.

Ramos and San Bernardino County Sheriff Gary Penrod and District Attorney Michael Ramos plan to attend next week's event, according to the tribe.

The announcement at the tribe's community center will be followed by a reception.
