Alleged marijuana robbery results in Round Valley shooting

A Covelo man was shot during an apparent marijuana robbery at his home on the Round Valley Indian reservation Tuesday night.
Alex Michael Texas, 42, was expected to recover from his injuries, said Mendocino County Sheriff’s Capt. Kurt Smallcomb.
The suspect, described only as a male adult, is being sought. He was driving a white, late 1980s model Chevrolet Suburban, Smallcomb said.
Texas was shot a little after 8 p.m. while confronting a man outside his Hopper Lane home.
He told law enforcement he noticed a vehicle drive onto his property and went outside to investigate. He found the vehicle parked near a two-story structure located about 100 feet from his home, Smallcomb said.
Texas made non-threatening statements to the suspect, who then fired a single blast from a shotgun, striking Texas in the chest, he said. The two were about 25 feet apart at the time, Smallcomb said.
A warrant obtained to search Texas’ property uncovered 53 marijuana plants and 45 pounds of processed marijuana, Smallcomb said. Freshly cut marijuana was located near the spot where Texas was shot, he said.
Deputies searched through the night for suspects and were continuing to search Wednesday, Smallcomb said.
Cora Simmons said she was getting ready for bed when she heard the shot.
“I stepped outside. My neighbor was hollering: ‘Call 911,’” she said.
Texas and a roommate live in a house up the hill from Simmons and her family. Neither are Round Valley tribal members but are friends with tribal members. Texas, who originally was from San Diego, has lived on the reservation for more than a decade, she said.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office.
