A Fortuna woman was killed early Saturday morning when her car struck a tree off the Main Street ramp.

Crystal Carpenter, 21, was driving southbound on U.S. Highway 101 and had exited the Main Street off ramp in Fortuna when she allowed her vehicle to hit a raised concrete island, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Carpenter's vehicle continued in a southerly direction until it crashed into a tree. Carpenter was not restrained inside the vehicle and received fatal injuries, the CHP said in a release.

No other information was available at deadline.

The Fortuna Fire Department and the Fortuna Police Department responded to the scene to provide assistance.

The collision is still under investigation by the CHP and the Humboldt County Coroner's Office.
