VISTA - Two men accused of killing a teenager and leaving his body in a dirt lot on the Pala Indian Reservation last year must stand trial on murder and torture charges, a judge in Vista ruled Thursday.

John Edward Maxcy and Brent Lee Molina, both 31, face life in prison if convicted in the death of 18-year-old Devin Blackowl on July 24, 2008.

After a daylong preliminary hearing, Judge Joan Weber found there was enough evidence presented for the defendants to stand trial. Arraignment is Superior Court was set for Sept. 22.

Maxcy was also charged with a separate assault two weeks after the murder at Qualcomm Stadium, said Deputy District Attorney Katherine Flaherty

Maxcy's parole was violated after the Aug. 9 altercation at the stadium and he was sent back to prison, the prosecutor said.

He was back behind bars when he was charged the following month with killing Blackowl.

A motive for the murder was unknown, although it is believed Maxcy and Blackowl knew each other, authorities said.
