Where can casino records be obtained?

Imperial Valley Press January 18, 2012

Imperial County has now endorsed the casino to be built in Calexico. Where can one obtain records of the agreement between Calexico and the casino? It has been many years since the agreement was made and it may now be outdated as to what each entity is to receive in compensation. Maybe your newspaper can print an article about that agreement for all to review. — Casino Watcher, Calexico

It’s been four to five years at this point since the city entered into an agreement with the Manzanita Band of Kummeyaay for the operation of the yet-to-built casino in Calexico.

We can imagine that four years later, the numbers tied to the casino are probably looking kind of small considering the revenue needs of cities, counties and schools in this age of economic upheaval.

The documents tied to the deal are public documents, at least those that spell out how much is due to the community if this casino ever gets built. And those documents should be available at both the county and the city.

A revenue-sharing agreement between Calexico and the tribe would have Calexico being paid $2 million a year, split up among several parties — $844,000 to City Hall, $600,000 to the Calexico Unified School District, $372,000 to the county and $184,000 to Imperial Valley College, all to mitigate impacts, fund law enforcement, deal with road usage, provide gambling addiction education and much more.

If we have this wrong let us know. We had a difficult time tracking this down in our archives and we answered the question on a holiday, so we couldn’t get ahold of the necessary officials.
