The Calexico City Council gives their stamp of approval for a planned commercial development)….The massive development is planned for an area in the southwest quadrant of Highway 111 and Jasper Road.
The almost two million sq/ft- development would include a 60-acre Casino. The Manzanita Band of the Kumeyaay tribe of Native Americans. The Casino still needs approval to be located off reservation. A compact needs to be negotiated with the State Government, and approval must come from the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Manzanita officials say the Casino is very important to their survival, but the Bureau, so far has been reluctant in approving their request. The City Council said the commercial development would give the city a major economic shot in the arm, but others say without the Casino, the development may not become a reality. It is expected to take about ten years for the development to be approved and constructed, if all goes as planned.
