Jackson Rancheria Casino to lay off 115

Monday, December 28, 2009 Sacramento Business Journal - by Mark Anderson Staff writer

Jackson Rancheria Casino is laying off 115 employees on Monday and Tuesday to deal with the flagging economy.

“We’ve tried to get our numbers down through attrition, but with the bad job market, no one was leaving. We had to do the layoff to get to where we need to be,” general manager Rich Hoffman said.

About 100 people have left the casino through attrition this year.

Jackson Rancheria will still have 1,780 employees, and remain the largest employer in Amador County.

Casino business has been off about 10 percent over the previous year. The casino draws customers from Galt to Modesto, areas which have been hard hit by the decline in housing prices and the collapse of real estate construction.

The workers being let go are mostly back-of-house positions in middle management, he said.

The employees were told of the pending cuts about six weeks ago, Hoffman said. They will be getting severance packages, and Hoffman said he hopes to be able to hire them back as business improves.

Jackson Rancheria operates a recreational vehicle park, gas station, hotel, concert venue, as well as the casino and its restaurants.

Most of the businesses are holding up well. It is the gaming that is down.

“Gaming hiccups, and it sure rocks the whole organization,” Hoffman said.
