Dec. 7 Letters from our readers

Letters from our readers Contra Costa Times 12/07/2009 12:01:00 AM PST Give us a chance

I disagree with your Nov. 30 editorial, which ripped Supervisor John Gioia and Rep. George Miller for their support of a Richmond Indian casino.

Gioia and Miller based their support for the casino on money. I'm not talking about money donated for their campaigns. I'm talking about money needed by Richmond and other cities, as well as county agencies. Read your Dec. 1 article, "Pension crisis grows for county."

While the casino may bring problems, it also will bring money to help solve those problems, and other problems as well. With help from elected officials and the community, we'll be able to work out anything.

The casino will bring a wide variety of jobs into Richmond. It will supply funding for needy families, health care, pensions, police and firefighters, schools and charities. The casino will bring tourists, who will find beautiful views, good restaurants, interesting stories of the area's history, gaming and more. Look at how San Pablo has been able to rebuild itself.

Think about the "what ifs." What if the casino isn't built in Richmond? What if there are few, if any, new jobs in Richmond? The city and county would both be on a downhill slide.

Give us a chance!

Eleanor Loynd, Richmond
