MARYSVILLE - The Yuba County Board of Supervisors has decided to ask voters for their opinion on whether an Indian casino should be allowed a few miles south of town, a top election official said Wednesday.
The five supervisors unanimously resolved Tuesday to put Measure G on the Nov. 8 special election ballot to find out how many of the county's 27,000 registered voters like the gaming house idea, County Clerk Terry Hansen said.
The non-binding referendum would read: "Should a destination resort/hotel and American Indian gaming casino be located within the sports/entertainment zone on Forty Mile Road in the County of Yuba?"
The board previously approved a memorandum of understanding with the Eestom Yumeka Maidu Tribe, Enterprise Rancheria in Butte County.
The action sparked considerable debate in the last year, pitting residents in the affected area and some anti-gaming groups against casino backers and business promoters.
The casino/hotel would be in an agricultural floodplain that has been inundated twice in the last two decades when the Feather River broke through aging levees.
The supervisors also have approved several housing developments in the same general floodplain area.
