Off Beat: Good luck, Jerry Brown

Yes, it really has been nine years since the proponents of Yuba County casino showed up at a Board of Supervisors meeting on July 2, 2002, and announced their intentions.

It was quite an odd spectacle. They weren't on the agenda. They just sort of appeared and said they wanted to build a casino.

The powers-that-be in Yuba County, or at least some of them, seemed quite favorably disposed to a big-time gambling operation.

Fast forward nine years to the start of a holiday weekend, the Labor Day weekend, and it was time for another big announcement about the casino.
The feds say yes! Great plan!. Quite a project!

Somewhere in the deep, dark, past, back when only Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger had a secret that nobody else knew about, the voters of Yuba County had their say about putting a casino in their midst.

Yes, they actually had an advisory vote in November 2005. Why did they vote? Because the governor, through one of his aides, told the powers-that-be in Yuba County that he wanted to gauge the level of support — or opposition — to the casino.

Yuba County voters said no, though not by an overwhelming margin. What happened next?

Nothing.

Nothing for six more years, until the start of the Labor Day weekend, when the feds announced their support.

Schwarzenegger is long gone from office. He never acted on a compact with the Enterprise Rancheria tribe because the feds took so long to act.
Now it's Jerry Brown's problem. He's got a year to figure it out. Good luck.
