Letter: All bets are off

December 11, 2011 Appeal Democrat

It's amazing how anything gets built anymore, except another government administration building.
Last time I checked, Yuba County continues to be fraught with one of the highest unemployment rates in the nation — proof-positive that business as usual isn't working.
Finally, after nine years of trying to build a casino that will bring thousands of jobs to Yuba County, the Maidu Tribe can see some light at the end of the tunnel.
However, certain forces in the county are clamoring to take another look at the desirability of going through with the deal at all. "Taking another look" at the MOU between Yuba County and the tribe is no more than a smokescreen to continue the delays and quash the project once and for all.
Miraculously, those who are morally opposed to an endeavor can find every excuse in the world to fight it, always in the name of some other concern.
To allow the tribe to pursue this project for nine long years and then pull the carpet out from underneath them would be unconscionable. What message would this send to any other industry considering Yuba County as its home base?
A 10-year approval process is the end result of a broken system. If this is a microcosm of what's happening across the nation, this country's in a heap of trouble.
Give the tribe a break, give Yuba County a break, and let's build this thing.
