Governor saying no to casino in Yuba

March 08, 2009 By Harold Kruger/Appeal-Democrat

Those of you who voted against the proposed Enterprise Rancheria casino back in 2005, take heart. The governor really was listening.

In a recent letter to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Andrea Hoch, the governor's legal affairs secretary, urges the federal government not to acquire 40 acres in Yuba County for the tribe.

"The state believes that the (secretary of the Interior) should not move forward with this acquisition unless and until the secretary determines that gaming on the newly acquire land would not be detrimental to the surrounding community and request gubernatorial concurrence," Hoch wrote.

She noted that the draft environmental impact report for the Yuba County casino acknowledges that a portion of the tribe's land in Butte County could be used for gaming.

"Therefore, it does not appear that the tribe needs additional land in trust for gaming," Hoch said.

The secretary "should not proceed with the acquisition," Hoch's letter concluded.

Where are they now?
