Advice from Oroville

February 27, 2010 10:42:00 PM By Harold Kruger/Appeal-Democrat

Up in Oroville, they care about Yuba County.

They care so much that they wrote a letter to the county, hoping to convince it of the error of its ways.

They, in this case, is the Mooretown Rancheria. More specifically, it's the Concow-Maidu of Mooretown Rancheria, an Indian tribe.

In fact, it's an Indian tribe that runs Feather Falls Casino.

And so earlier this month, tribal Chairman Gary Archuleta fired off a seven-page letter to the Yuba County supervisors, urging them to rethink the memorandum of understanding they entered into way back many years ago with Enterprise Rancheria.

Like Mooretown, Enterprise Rancheria is a Butte County tribe.

Unlike Mooretown, Enterprise Rancheria doesn't run a casino — yet.

Enterprise Rancheria hopes to open a hotel-casino in Yuba County some day.

"Enterprise is the wrong tribe, doing the wrong thing, in the wrong place," Archuleta opined. "You should rescind the MOU and focus your efforts and energies on the projects that really will bring jobs and prosperity to Yuba County."

Unfortunately, Chairman Archuleta doesn't suggest what those projects might or could be.

His missive is chock-full of analysis on the current state of affairs of tribal gaming and its relationships to state and federal laws. All in all, quite interesting reading.

"Since Yuba County ventured forward eight long years ago, aspiring to develop an off-reservation casino with the Enterprise Tribe, many state and federal policies have come into question," Archuleta noted. "Thus, we are writing you again to alert you to a number of serious issues that Yuba County faces should it choose to continue in this endeavor ..."

Copies of the letter also went to Rep. Wally Herger, Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and, probably most importantly, Assemblyman Dan Logue.

You think Mooretown is trying to make a point?
