Ex-Employee Reportedly Fires Shots on San Diego Casino Grounds

Tuesday , December 29, 2009 Fox News

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department and SWAT teams responded to a call of shots fired at the gaming commission office on the grounds of the city's Barona Resort and Casino on Tuesday.

Sheriff's department spokeswoman Jan Caldwell reportedly told local media that a 38-year-old El Cajon man named Donell Roberts went into an office at the gaming commission armed with a rifle.

Caldwell reportedly said that Roberts had been employed at the gaming commission until he was fired in November. She said he had also been employed as a security guard at the casino prior to his stint on the gaming commission. She did not provide details about why he was terminated.

Witnesses reported that a man had walked into the security director's office Tuesday morning with a rifle and fired three shots.

Reports indicate that the shooter is still inside the building.

Some reports indicate that the man held hostages but that they have since been released. It is not clear whether anyone was injured.

After the shots were fired inside the security director's office at the gaming commission, witnesses say "people were trying to climb out of windows to get out of the line of fire."

Employees were being evacuated and police and SWAT teams surrounded the area.

The entrances to the Barona Resort and Casino have been closed off to employees and customers and no one is allowed to leave.
