TAMPA — A Seminole tribe police officer shot a man who ran him over with a golf cart Thursday night outside the Hard Rock casino complex, said a spokesman for the tribe's law enforcement agency.

Jonathan Bestoso, 24, of Tampa, and the unidentified officer were taken to Tampa General Hospital in advanced life support ambulances just after 7 p.m., according to Hillsborough County Fire Rescue.

Casino officials said Bestoso was in the process of taking a gold chain from one of the casino's maintenance workers when the officer approached. The accused thief hopped into the maintenance worker's golf cart and ran the officer over, said Gary Bitner, a spokesman for the Seminole tribe police department.
The altercation took place in the north parking lot of the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.

Bitner said the officer shot the driver in an effort to subdue him. It was not immediately known if the man was a patron of the casino.
Bestoso was in critical condition with multiple gun shot wounds Thursday night and the officer was in good condition with a neck brace and several other injuries, Bitner said.

According to jail records, Bestoso was arrested in March on a charge of soliciting on a right of way. He was also arrested and charged with battery on a law enforcement officer in October and open container in September.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has taken over the crime scene investigation and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will be investigating the shooting.
