Anti-casino group: Most voters oppose Enterprise Rancheria

Nearly two-thirds of voters in Yuba County are opposed to Enterprise Rancheria’s casino, according to polling released by an anti-casino group.

When asked whether they support or oppose the proposed casino near Sleep Train Amphitheatre, 63 percent said they were in opposition, versus 32 percent who support it.

The group, Stand Up For California!, has scheduled a news conference today at the Yuba County Government Center to discuss the polling, which also showed 69 percent of county voters oppose building casinos off reservations at all, and 73 percent feel tribes should get voters’ permission before moving forward on a casino project.

Estom Yumeka Maidu, Enterprise Rancheria’s backing tribe, is based in Oroville, but the federal government has determined its tribal lands included Yuba County.

Jim Moore Methods of Sacramento conducted the polling of 300 county voters between Nov. 11 and 14. Stand Up For California! did not release the survey questions themselves, but noted the margin of error was plus or minus 5.7 percent.

In a press release about the poll results, Yuba County Supervisor Roger Abe noted an advisory ballot in measure in 2005 showed 52 percent of the county’s voters opposed the project then, which he took as a sign opposition is increasing.

Stand Up For California has a town hall meeting scheduled for Thursday in Wheatland to express more concerns about the casino, which received federal approval earlier this year. It requires a similar approval from Gov. Jerry Brown before next September to move forward. The group asked opponents of the casino to contact Brown’s office.

A tribal representative said he had not seen the results, but would review it later in the day.
