Mashantucket financial meltdown resonates through Indian country
By Gale Courey Toensing Story Published: Dec 31, 2009 "Lenders and other tribes are closely monitoring the Mashantucket’s financial circumstance and how it will be resolved as it will set a precedent for Indian casinos and other businesses everywhere. Creditors can’t take over an Indian casino or force the sale of its assets, because of a tribe’s status as a sovereign nation. For the same reason, it is generally assumed that tribes cannot protect themselves under U.S. bankruptcy laws, although that assumption has never been tested in a U.S. court."

Court Ordered Eviction of California Valley Miwok Tribe
BACKGROUND: You may recall in 1999 the Sheep Ranch Rancheria, was a tribe of one person, a man named Yakima Dixie. Ms. Burley persuaded Mr. Dixie to enroll her children and herself into the tribe. She then took over the tribe and changed its name. Ms. Burley hooked up originally with NORAM an out of state gaming investor promoting off-reservation gaming in California. The tribal business office in question I am advised, is no where near the existing Sheep Ranch Rancheria.
